Leading data centers into a new era
Necessity is said to be the mother of invention and Singapore has proven that through its history and through its development as a data center hub. Its estimated capacity of over 600 MW is located on a small island with no fossil fuel resources and limited access to renewables. Singapore has prospered through innovation that has woven data centers and technology into the fabric of the state as a key to the future. Combined with social stability, transparency and various rankings for doing business where it is always in the Top Ten, this creates a sought-after ecosystem in which to locate a data center. But the data center landscape is changing and the data center of the future will be denser, better connected, more automated, more reliant on sources of renewable energy and more reliant on specialist skill sets. How will Singapore manage this upcoming wave of changes in order to retain its premium status globally?
Come to W.Media’s 2023 Singapore Datacenter event and find out more!
Singapore continues to play a key role in the global digital ecosystem as a gateway into South East Asia and the wider Asia Pacific region. Additionally, digital demand is generated by its role as a major financial, commercial and logistics hub.
How will Singapore’s role change over the next few years? What will be the challenges? And the opportunities?
The digital economy heavily relies on data centers, cloud computing, and other digital infrastructure that require substantial amounts of energy. Businesses need to ensure their data centers can withstand the effects of climate change by improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy sources. Because if left unchecked, the growing carbon footprint will impact data center resiliency, amplifying the challenges faced by data center owners and operators today.
The demand for data centers continues to soar in Singapore and Southeast Asia and operators need to address the challenges of serving this growing market. In this keynote, we will explore two critical aspects: “Building hyperscale capacity to serve the demand in Singapore and SEA – PDG’s unique SG+ strategy” and “Designing and building the sustainable tropical data center.”, delving into strategies for building highly scalable, sustainable, optimised data center solutions especially suited to SEA.
While data centers initially emerged from the predominantly temperate markets of North America, Europe and Japan, the strongest growth is now to be found in the tropics – Singapore and South East Asia, India, Nigeria and East Africa, Brazil and Mexico. The tropical data center has commanded special attention over the past decade as it became clear that the principles of design and operation needed to be rethought with tropical conditions in mind. Key industry players in Singapore supported by the (then) IDA and global facility technology specialists set out to develop technologies and standards to improve efficiency without compromising resilience. SS 697:2023 represents the analysis of data from production servers monitored by the TDC research team and the recommendations derived from this in terms of the operation of the Tropical Data Centre.
So, based on what is now known about the operation and performance of the Tropical Data Centre, how have specific innovations in design and operation enabled this? how will these innovations evolve into the future? what has been learned about the operational costs and investment performance of the tropical data center, and what are the implications for SLAs?
