ECL, a data center startup, has announced the world’s first off-grid data center as a service, powered entirely by green hydrogen and offering 99.999% uptime at a significant cost savings over traditional colocation data centers.
ECL will provide off-grid data centers in 1 megawatt (MW) blocks with 99.999% uptime in a modular and sustainable manner. These green hydrogen-powered modular data centers-as-a-service, which are often major companies that use a combination of on-site and cloud IT environments, have been designed for use by mid-sized data center operators.
Datacenter-as-a-Service from ECL has been built to integrate with the community and use no local resources, not even water or electricity. It operates at extremely low noise levels with no emissions. The data center can be constructed and deployed much more quickly than the data centers of other companies thanks to its modularity and lack of reliance on local utilities. ECL’s data centers are built in between six and nine months instead of the traditional 18 to 24 months.
The total cost of ownership of ECL’s data center is two-thirds that of traditional colocation data center providers when calculated over a five-year period.
ECL as First to Introduce Such Data Center
Despite the fact that hydrogen fuel cells are not a recent development in the industry, other providers of data centers have only started using this eco-friendly technology as backup power sources. An entirely green H2-powered data center is being delivered for the first time by ECL.
This breakthrough maximizes efficiency and practically eliminates waste by combining environmentally friendly hydrogen power generation, battery energy storage, and a dependable power architecture that is independent of the local utility grid.
According to Yuval Bachar, Founder and CEO of ECL, hydrogen has never before been used as a primary power source for a data center, making it one of a kind in the modern world when combined with the cooling system’s unparalleled efficiency and emissions-free operations.
Both Molex Ventures and Hyper wise Ventures have provided $7 million in initial funding to ECL. At the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, the investment will be used to establish ECL’s first data center and to increase its market share. In the second quarter of 2023, completion is anticipated.
