Zoom Video Communications Inc, a cyber conferencing company, has started running a cloud computing data center in Taiwan, after becoming the first US company to pass the government’s fundamental security test for mobile applications.
According to a statement from Zoom, the company has satisfied the two key criteria for international cyber conferencing companies established by the government in 2020, including maintaining servers locally and completing a cybersecurity test.
It claimed that the government-sponsored Telecom Technology Center test was successfully completed by the iOS and Android versions of its mobile applications.
Zoom product and engineering president Velchamy Sankarlingam said that the data center’s opening was a turning point in the development of the California-based company and predicted that Zoom will be important to several industries in Taiwan.
When the Executive Yuan referenced Zoom in an advisory in 2020 and advised consumers to be wary of information security risks, the company’s security had already been questioned by the government. The warning was issued not long after the platforms’ popularity soared as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Should it become operationally necessary to engage in videoconferencing, the underlying video software to be used should not have associated security or privacy concerns, such as the Zoom video communication service,” the Executive Yuan said.
