The government of the western Indian state of Maharashtra has virtually rolled out the red carpet for AirTrunk’s upcoming data center project, which is worth a whopping ₹2 lakh crore (~US$ 21 billion) and will be located in Raigad. The state has signed a Letter of Intent for land allotment to AirTrunk for this project.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) after a meeting with AirTrunk’s founder and CEO Robin Khuda on Monday.
“We exchanged a Letter of Intent for land allotment at the Raigad Pen Growth Centre (Orange City) for their upcoming Data Center — a massive ₹2 Lakh Crore investment with 3 GW capacity,” said Fadnavis. “Backed by Blackstone, AirTrunk’s investment will power Maharashtra’s digital future!”
Founded in 2015, Airtunk opened its very first data center in Australia. Over the years it has also established a presence in Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and now India. Readers would recall that in April this year, AirTrunk made its foray into India with the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra, the data center arm of Blackstone, an alternative asset manager with a burgeoning data center portfolio. Meanwhile, AirTrunk was acquired by Blackstone, in late 2024.
According to a recent report by Cushman & Wakefield, Mumbai is still the largest data center market in India, accounting for near 50 percent of the current operational capacity, and 43 percent of projects in the national pipeline. The report titled Asia Pacific Data Center Market Overview found that in 2025, Mumbai recorded a substantial 42 percent increase in operational capacity, rising from 542 MW in Q4 2024 to 768 MW in Q4 2025.
It is interesting that this growth is now spilling out of the city of Mumbai and its suburbs, given land and power constraints. These days, most new data center planning and development is taking place in areas around Mumbai like Thane, and many parts of Navi Mumbai like Belapur and Taloja. In the last few years even Panvel, that is part of the Raigad district, that is just across a creek from Mumbai, is emerging as attractive data center destination.
