AWS is planning a data center development in Covington, Georgia, though details of the project remain limited. The Covington project is reportedly part of AWS’s broader expansion in Georgia where the company announced plans to invest US$ 11 billion in early 2025, with most of the spending focused in Butts County, and Douglas County with Covington located in neighbouring Newton County.
AWS has not disclosed the size of the data center, its power requirements, its expected IT capacity and no construction timeline has been made public.
Covington News and WSB-TV reported that AWS has reached a US$ 100 million agreement with the City of Covington to build a water treatment and cooling facility that will support the planned data center. The agreement was approved at a council meeting on December 15. City officials said the facility will serve a data center AWS is developing along Alcovy Road, near Interstate 20.
The water infrastructure is expected to be constructed and funded by AWS. According to the company, the system is designed to rely primarily on outside air for cooling, with water-based cooling required only during limited periods. AWS plans to build a reclaimed water system intended to reduce the use of freshwater supplies for cooling the facility. The company estimates the system could preserve more than 45 million gallons of freshwater annually once operational.
In January 2024, AWS purchased approximately 430 acres of land in Covington across three transactions for a combined US$ 36 million. The parcels are located along I-20, which intersects with Alcovy Road near the proposed data center site.
Local officials expect the development to generate new tax revenue, though the scale of the economic impact remains unclear until more details about the facility are released.
