Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global IT services, consulting, and business solutions firm, has reportedly secured 200 acres of land in Anakapalli district, where Google is already building a 1 GW hyperscale data center, from the government of Andhra Pradesh, a state in southeastern India.
The Economic Times reports that the land parcel in Anakapalli, located near Visakhapatnam (Vizag), will be the site of OpenAI’s first data center facility in India. Neither OpenAI nor TCS has officially confirmed what the land is for at this stage though it is known that the two firms are working together in India.
“OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business, beginning with 100 megawatts of capacity and with potential to scale to 1 gigawatt over time,” OpenAI announced in February.
This 200-acre parcel of land could be used for anything, but considering TCS’s broader data center plans, the OpenAI partnership, and a push by the Andhra Pradesh government to attract digital infrastructure investment, strongly suggests the land will be used for a data center.
In a separate transaction, TCS, through its subsidiary HyperVault AI Data Center Limited, has acquired an 88-acre parcel of land in Bopkhel, a suburb in northern Pune, Maharashtra. According to a statement submitted to BSE, HyperVault paid Hemisphere Properties, a public sector enterprise responsible for liquidating VSNL (now Tata Communications) assets, Rs 640.50 crore (US$ 66.6 million) for the land.
TCS has been investing heavily in growing digital infrastructure in India. In November 2025, it announced that it had partnered with TPG to support HyperVault’s gigawatt-scale AI-ready infrastructure build with a view to expanding TCS’s AI-ready data center capacity to over a gigawatt in the next few years. TCS and TPG committed to investing up to Rs 18,000 crore (US$ 1.8 billion) in funding for HyperVault with TPG investing up to Rs 8,820 crore (US$ 916 million) for a stake of between 27.5 percent and 49 percent of HyperVault.
Last week TCS launched the Consumer Business Group (CBG) Gemini Experience Center (GEC) in Kolkata, India. The center will showcase AI-led innovations tailored for consumer business needs and built with Google Cloud and Google’s Gemini models. This is the third Gemini Experience Center in India.
By November 2025, data center capacity in India had surpassed 1.5 GW with 260 MW of capacity coming online in 2025 alone. The country had secured US$ 94 billion in investment from global and domestic investors with 45 percent of that investment concentrated in Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Karnataka, according to CBRE.
