NTT Data Group, a global provider of AI, digital business and technology services, is planning a large new data center campus in Shiroi, Chiba Prefecture, as demand for cloud and AI infrastructure continues to grow in Japan. The project, being developed through its subsidiary NTT Global Data Center Corporation (NTT GDC), will add a major facility to the Inzai-Shiroi area, already one of the country’s most concentrated hubs for data centers.
According to a press release the planned campus, known as Tokyo TKY12, is expected to deliver around 200 MWs in IT capacity, making it one of the largest data center developments in Japan. It will be built near the company’s Tokyo TKY11 facility, which is scheduled to begin operations in April 2027 with a capacity of 50 MWs. Together, the sites are part of a broader effort to expand infrastructure for hyperscale cloud providers and enterprise clients.
The site location was selected in part for its relatively low disaster risk at 20 meters above sea level near Narita Airport, Tokyo. The surrounding area has become a key destination for data center operators due to available land and existing infrastructure.
The new campus is expected to include six buildings designed for high-density computing. The company says the design will allow for future expansion and incorporate energy-efficient power and cooling systems to handle increasing demand tied to artificial intelligence and cloud services.
The development also aligns with NTT Data’s broader environmental targets, which include reaching net-zero emissions across its operations by 2040. The company aims to eliminate emissions from its data centers by 2030 and is planning the new facility with systems intended to meet those goals.
A timeline for construction has not been fully detailed, but the first phase of the campus is expected to begin operations sometime after 2030, once power infrastructure is in place.
Readers will recall that NTT Data Group, recently announced the official opening of its Keihanna OSK11 Data Center in Kyoto. This facility delivers 30MW of IT capacity and is NTT DATA’s fourteenth data center in Japan. The two facilities are part of NTT GDC’s global platform of more than 160 data centers in over 20 countries. Their announcement within weeks of each other, strengthens the company’s presence in Japan, one of Asia’s most important and vibrant digital infrastructure markets.
