Keppel Data Centres and Woodside Energy have signed an agreement to explore the possibility of supplying liquid hydrogen to Singapore.
Keppel plans to use hydrogen to power its data center operations, including the upcoming Datapark+ facility in Singapore.
According to the International Trade Administration, proposals for new data centers in Singapore must incorporate either hydrogen or solar panel technologies, maintain a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3 or lower, be Platinum-certified under Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green mark, and adopt state-of-the-art sustainability practices.
The BCA-IMDA Green Mark for data centers scheme involves a specialised green building rating system for data centers that promotes the implementation of energy-efficient design, operation, and management practices in data centers . The program is intended to encourage and incentivize the adoption of sustainable practices for data centers.
Data center providers are re-evaluating their approaches and considering alternative models such as data park consolidation, floating data centers, and repurposing of older facilities.
Last September, Equinix, a digital infrastructure firm based in the United States, disclosed its collaboration with the National University of Singapore to trial hydrogen fuel cells as an energy source for data centers located in Singapore.
