The southern Indian state of Karnataka is gearing up for data center development of a total capacity of 1 GW which will be spread across three cities. While Bengaluru, which is one of India’s oldest technology hubs, and is often dubbed as its IT capital, will get a data center park of 500 MW capacity, the remainder will be divided between Mysuru, and Mangaluru.
Mordor Intelligence estimated the size of Bengaluru’s data center market to be around 203.17 MW in 2025. It further forecasts the capacity to reach 398.22 MW by 2031, reflecting an 11.87 percent CAGR over the period. “Robust hyperscale demand, an expanding 6 GW state renewables pipeline, and enforced data-localization rules combine to make Bengaluru the fastest-growing data-center cluster in India,” finds the publication. “Consolidation of GPU-dense AI workloads, rapid migration of enterprise IT estates from on-premises rooms to compliant colocation halls, and tariff waivers for open-access green power further reinforce the city’s competitive edge.”
According to Deccan Herald, Karnataka’s Energy Minister KJ George, Industries Minister MB Patil, and Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge, held a preliminary meeting with officials to iron out the details, and set the ball rolling for the three projects.
“A sustainable data centre park with a capacity of 500 MW will be established near Hoskote in Bengaluru. Solar power generated at Pavagada will be supplied directly to the park. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board has indicated that there will be no difficulty in supplying 60 MLD of secondary treated water, while industries themselves will undertake tertiary treatment,” Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil’s office said in a release.
According to The Hindu Business Line, around 350 acres belonging to Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has been identified as a potential site for the data center park in the Baikampady Industrial Area of Mangaluru. Suitable land will also be identified in Mysuru.
Also present at the meeting were Energy and Water Resources Department Secretary Gaurav Gupta, Industries Department Principal Secretary Selvakumar, IT Department Principal Secretary Manjula, KSIIDC Managing Director Khushbu Goyal, KIADB Commissioner Dr Mahesh, Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board Chairman Rammanohar Prasath, and IT Director Rahul Sankanur, among others. In the next phase, a committee of ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar (Water Resources), and senior officials, will be constituted.
