Following the signing of a $575 million joint venture agreement in March 2022, Equinix and PGIM Real Estate have opened the first xScale data centre in Sydney, named SY9x.
S9x is the first of two data centres to be developed and operated under the joint agreement. The combined facilities, S9x and SY10x, which are located in Rosehill, will provide over 55MW of power capacity once construction is complete.
Currently, SY9x provides more than 14MW of power capacity, and will provide over 28MW when fully built out.
Equinix and PGIM Real Estate hope that SY9x and SY10x will meet the surging demand for cloud-based platforms and services among firms in Australia, adjacent to the Western Sydney CBD of Parramatta.
Essential Digital Infrastructure
Managing Director of Equinix Australia, Guy Danskine, noted that to address the increasing demand for cloud and digital infrastructure, the opening of the first xScale data centre in Australia would ensure that more organisations can implement their digital-first strategies.
He added that the new data centre infrastructure “enables customers to scale their operations, deliver exceptional customer experiences and unlock the value of artificial intelligence, machine learning, 5G and other emerging technologies.”
Equinix President and CEO Charles Meyer said that “as digital transformation accelerates across all industries; hybrid multi-cloud is becoming the IT architecture of choice for leading businesses.”
“These companies recognise that digital infrastructure is a source of competitive advantage, and they are leveraging Platform Equinix to directly connect and operate close to the largest cloud companies powering this infrastructure.”
By storing their data with Equinix xScale data centres, hyperscale companies can add core deployments to their existing access point footprints at Equinix International Business ExchangeTM (IBX) data centres. Hyperscale companies may enable their growth on a single platform that spans 70 global metros and offers direct interconnection to an ecosystem of over 10 000 customers.
Expressing his support for the joint venture, Stuart Ayres, New South Wales Minister for Enterprise, Investment, and Trade, Minister for Tourism and Sport, and Minister for Western Sydney said that “Western Sydney is a fast-growing region of great opportunity and potential, offering a diverse and dynamic economic centre.”
“This first hyperscale data centre under the US$575 million joint venture by Equinix and PGIM Real Estate provides essential digital infrastructure to the world’s largest cloud service providers and helps create jobs in our local communities.”
