FiberCop, a provider of digital network infrastructure, has begun developing a national edge data center network based on more than 100 facilities distributed across Italy, converting its telecommunications exchanges into digital hubs for computing, connectivity and data management. The edge data center programme is part of FiberCop’s wider modernisation plan, which includes the decommissioning of traditional copper exchanges and the transition to fiber-based infrastructure.
According to a press release, the project will transform FiberCop’s existing exchanges, which currently serve as access network points, into distributed infrastructure nodes designed to support digital services for operators, businesses and public administrations. The first edge data center is already operational in Rome, with additional sites planned in Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Naples and Palermo.
“Our exchanges are moving from network access points to become true innovation hubs, in which connectivity, computing power and storage capacity are integrated to support the country’s digital development,” said Massimo Sarmi, Chairman and CEO, FiberCop. “With this plan, FiberCop takes a further step forward in transforming its network infrastructure into an enabling technology platform, capable of supporting the growth of the edge cloud, artificial intelligence and new digital services.”
The edge architecture is designed to bring computing resources closer to users and data sources, supporting applications that require low latency, improved data protection and more efficient connectivity. The infrastructure will also support artificial intelligence adoption by businesses and public sector organisations.
The network will allow operators to develop services for local governments in areas including mobility, healthcare, environmental monitoring, security and public administration through its Innovation Hub and collaborations with universities, research centers and industry groups. FiberCop is also involved in projects focused on digital infrastructure resilience, security and European technological sovereignty. These initiatives include work on technologies such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for protecting communications and data.
