Sea Ltd, a Singapore-based technology conglomerate, has announced the launch of a new business called Sea Cloud that will offer cloud services to businesses around the world in a bid to capitalize on the growing demand for AI.
The establishment of the new business was announced by Forrest Li, Sea founder and Chief Executive Officer, in an email to staff in which he celebrated the ninth anniversary of Sea’s public listing on the New York Stock Exchange and reflected how far the company has come. The email revealed Sea has built and run its own cloud platform for more than a decade and that the platform powers Garena, Shopee, and Monee. In the last two years a team of 500 people has been rebuilding that cloud platform to power AI applications.
“When we built Shopee at the start of the mobile internet era, we made it mobile-first while much of our competition was still thinking in terms of websites. We believe AI is that moment again. Sea Cloud will be an AI-first enterprise platform, built by a team that has spent a decade running infrastructure at enormous scale, under real commercial pressure, for some of the most demanding consumer businesses in this region. That’s a credential that can’t be bought; it’s one you can only earn by operating,” Li wrote.
Sea Cloud is set to face stiff competition in the cloud market from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud. Li did not say when Sea Cloud would be available.
Alongside this announcement, Li said Sea was preparing an initial public offering for Monee, which would allow the financial technology firm to acquire the resources it needs to grow further.
Sea is entering the cloud AI market at an opportune time. According to Mordor Intelligence, the market is projected to grow from US$ 114.26 billion in 2026 to US$ 269.02 billion by 2031. This growth will come on the back of enterprises shifting from small-scale pilots to large-scale production workloads. While the US held the lion’s share of the cloud AI market in 2025, at 40.59 percent, the market is growing quickly in Asia-Pacific, with a 22.74 percent compound annual growth rate through 2031 driven by state-led mandates and rising private investment.
