Data center operator Digital Realty has installed solar panels at its SIN11 data center in Singapore as part of its Asia Pacific move to drive sustainability.

The solar project aims to diminish reliance on grid power generated from non-renewable sources. A similar project is presently in progress at the SIN12 data center and is projected to complete by the middle of this year. This is part of Digital Realty’s plan to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 68% and Scope 3 emissions by 24% by 2030.

The data center industry has been taking steps towards sustainability by implementing practices to reduce its carbon footprint. In January, Supernap, a Thailand-based data center, unveiled its very first solar project to power its data center.

Princeton Digital Group (PDG) announced in February that it has procured Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for three of its data centers in Jakarta, Bandung and Pekanbaru in Indonesia. Issued by Indonesian state-owned electricity firm, PLN, the certificates are from electricity generated from the geothermal project, PLTP Kamojang.

Earlier this year, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India Private Limited (STT GDC India) and O2 Renewable Energy (IV) Private Limited, a subsidiary of O2 Energy SG Pte. Ltd., joined together to acquire renewable energy through a captive structure.
