AWS has launched a new Local Zone in Hanoi, Vietnam, bringing AWS infrastructure closer to customers in the region and allowing organizations to store and back up data locally. The Hanoi Local Zone is among the first AWS Local Zones in Asia Pacific to support Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS).
AWS Local Zones are infrastructure deployments that extend AWS services, including compute, storage, and networking, closer to major population centers. They are designed to support applications that require low latency, local data processing, and faster migration of existing workloads to the cloud while using the same AWS APIs and management tools available in AWS Regions.
According to a company press release, the Hanoi Local Zone supports several AWS services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances powered by C7i, M7i, and R7i processors, Amazon S3 with the One Zone-Infrequent Access storage class, and Amazon EBS with Local Snapshots and volume options including gp3, gp2, io1, sc1, and st1.
Other supported services include Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), AWS Direct Connect, and Application Load Balancer.
Customers can enable the Hanoi Local Zone, identified as ap-southeast-1-han-1a, through the Regions and Zones tab in AWS Global View or by using the ModifyAvailabilityZoneGroup API. AWS has also provided pricing details through its Local Zones pricing page.
