Mistral AI, a French generative artificial intelligence (AI) company, and EcoDataCenter, a sustainable data center operator and high-performance computing (HPC) service provider, have announced a €1.2 billion (US$ 1.4 billion) partnership to build an AI-focused data center at EcoDataCenter’s Borlänge site in Sweden. The project, set to open in 2027, marks Mistral AI’s first AI infrastructure investment outside France, and aims to strengthen Europe’s technological autonomy in artificial intelligence.
According to a press release, the facility will host large-scale AI compute for Mistral AI’s next-generation models and deliver a fully European AI stack, combining Mistral’s foundation models with EcoDataCenter’s high-performance, sustainable infrastructure. Data will be processed and stored locally in Europe.
Arthur Mensch, CEO and Co-Founder, Mistral AI, said, “By delivering a fully vertical offer with locally processed and stored data, we are reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness. This lays the foundation for a European AI cloud that can serve industries, public institutions, and researchers at scale.”
Peter Michelson, CEO, EcoDataCenter, said, “Together with Mistral AI, we are building high-performance AI infrastructure on Swedish soil – with sustainability, resilience and European strategic autonomy at its core. This investment strengthens Sweden’s position as a leading hub for advanced AI and digital infrastructure in Europe.”
EcoDataCenter will design, build, and operate the infrastructure, using renewable energy, advanced cooling technologies, and expertise in high-density AI data centers. The Borlänge site is scalable and designed to handle demanding AI workloads, including hosting NVIDIA’s latest-generation Vera Rubin GPUs.
The initiative aligns with broader European efforts to secure long-term competitiveness and resilience in the digital economy by investing in local AI infrastructure and compute capabilities.
