SGC Energy, a South Korean energy company, will build a 300 MW AI data center in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. The announcement was made at a partnership ceremony at SGC Energy’s headquarters in Seocho District in Seoul recently, with senior executives from KT Corporation (KT) and Mirae Asset Securities in attendance.
Maeil Business Newspaper reports that the AI data center will be built within Gunsan National Industrial Complex 2 on a site spread over nearly 115,000 square meters. Construction for the first phase comprising a 40 MW modular data center is expected to commence by the end of this year, and operations scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2028. The facility will eventually be expanded in stages to a total capacity of 300 MW.
The publication quoted Lee Woo-sung, CEO of SGC Energy, as saying, “This project goes beyond simple infrastructure construction and will be a key turning point for SGC Group to transform into a specialized AI energy infrastructure company, a core business for the future.” He added, “We will continue to actively pursue new mid- to long-term growth engines and maximize our future corporate value by expanding into high value-added businesses.”
Gunsan National Industrial Complex 2 is already a hub for industry and manufacturing, and its location away from Seoul also falls in line with South Korea’s strategy to declutter the capital and have more balanced regional growth, especially when it comes to development of digital infrastructure. The site’s coastal setting offers it the opportunity to tap into deep ocean water as a means of cooling. SGC Energy also aims to build on its experience in the energy industry to ensure stable power supply.
