UpCloud has announced that its new data center in Stavanger, Norway, has gone live, extending its cloud infrastructure across the Nordic region. What’s exciting about this data center is that it is located at the site of what was once a NATO ammunition storage facility, deep inside a granite mountain!
In an official blog UpCloud revealed that the “military grade bunker” that has been transformed into a data center, located in Rennesøy outside Stavanger, is operated in partnership with Green Mountain. It further says that this “mountain fortress” offers high physical security and resilience, including protection against electromagnetic pulses and natural disasters.
The company now offers availability zones in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway, providing customers with regional redundancy, ultra-low latency, and data sovereignty. UpCloud says, “This launch marks another milestone for us. With the opening of our Norwegian data center, UpCloud is now the only cloud-native infrastructure provider offering pan-Nordic coverage.”
The data center is Tier III certified by the Uptime Institute and uses a deep-water fjord cooling system, achieving a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) as low as 1.2. Norway’s renewable energy sector also supports UpCloud’s sustainability goals as the new facility runs on 100 percent renewable hydroelectric power.
The location ensures full GDPR compliance under the European Economic Area while providing a distinct jurisdiction from the EU, giving businesses additional options for data governance, and links Norway with existing hubs in Helsinki, Stockholm, and Copenhagen.
The addition of the Stavanger facility expands UpCloud’s regional presence, combining high-performance AMD EPYC hardware, extreme physical security, and energy-efficient operations across Northern Europe.
