YTL Power International Bhd is exploring building data centres and becoming a power producer in South Africa, according to reports. The conglomerate has targeted building a data center there within a year or two, sad the report, quoting YTL Power executive director Yeoh Keong Hann.

Yeoh added that the South African government also requested for YTL’s expertise in water management. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had invited YTL to the G20 summit held in the country recently.

In early November, YTL Power had completed Malaysia’s first Nvidia-powered AI data center in Johor, which is already operational, with global hyperscalers counting among some of its customers.

In addition, YTL Power operates a power producer in Singapore and a water utility in the UK. YTL Power is a subsidiary of YTL Corporation Berhad, a leading conglomerate in Malaysia.
