The 5G-ATG technology utilizes 5G mobile communication technology and establishes a communication link between the ground and aircraft cabins through dedicated base stations and beam-shaped antennas along flight routes. Passengers can connect to the internet using wireless LAN access within the cabin, complying with international and domestic regulations.
The MIIT highlights that 5G-ATG represents a significant advancement in aviation internet technology, enabling new business applications for 5G and other emerging technologies in the aviation industry. While challenges remain in implementing 5G-ATG, industry experts believe it to be the most cost-effective and accessible option for in-flight internet connectivity. The adoption of 5G-ATG is expected to fuel the development of smart aviation and meet the increasing demand for data transmission during flights.
Apart from 5G technology that is being implemented in the aviation field, in January 2023, China has also launched world’s first 5G cruise ship wherein it is the first time a 5G network has ever been installed on a cruise ship and it raises the bar for connection and convenience.
This initiative aims to provide seamless multimedia interactions and reliable mobile connectivity for passengers and staff, enabling them to stay in touch with their loved ones while at sea.
