Adora Cruises, CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd’s own cruise brand, and China Telecom Corp Ltd Shanghai Branch, a major 5G network service provider in China, collaborate to debut the world’s first cruise ship covered by a 5G network later this year in China.
The largest leisure travel provider in the world, Carnival Corp & plc, has partnered with the world’s largest shipbuilder, China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), to form CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Ltd.
The cruise company’s first two China-built large cruise ships are currently under construction at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Corp, and will eventually operate under the name Adora.
While the second Adora cruise ship is still being developed and built, the first, a 135,500-gross-ton ship, is anticipated to set sail by the end of 2023.
This partnership between Adora and China Telecom is a significant achievement because it is the first time a 5G network has ever been installed on a cruise ship and it raises the bar for connection and convenience, according to a press release on Thursday.
According to Chen Ranfeng, Managing Director of CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping Limited, their mission is to provide seamless multimedia interactions and reliable mobile connectivity for passengers and staff, enabling them to stay in touch with loved ones and the outside world while at sea. This includes network design, satellite communication, and a variety of digital applications.
“By seizing a first-mover advantage in the cruise industry’s 5G market, we hope to set a new standard for digital communication in the marine travel sector.” said Ranfeng.
Adora Cruises is aiming toward a time when passengers can benefit from an improved cruise experience with 5G connectivity, access to all-encompassing entertainment, and real-time communication, the company said.
Moreover, Gong Bo, general manager of Shanghai Telecom, said that incorporating 5G and satellite technologies, they will concentrate on network communication, digital HD, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) as well as other content services to further enhance their guests’ experiences and jointly support high-quality development of the tourism industry.
