Tesla may be developing its ‘1st of its kind data centers’, according to a job post on their official website.
First highlighted by electrek, the job ad is for the role of Sr. Engineering Program Manager, Data Centers based in Austin, Texas. Among the responsiblities outlined in the ad is the need to lead the full design and engineering of Tesla Data Centers from concept to launch.
Tesla had started using one of the NTT Global Data Centers facilities in June, which was previously used by Twitter in Sacramento after its lease expired.
Tesla could potentially utilize its data centers to manage the substantial amount of data produced by its electric vehicles, encompassing their self-driving features. The safeguarding of Tesla’s data security and privacy could also be perceived as an additional motive for the company to possess its own data centers, reducing dependence on external solutions.
Due to the continuous growth of the data center industry, Tesla’s involvement in the market could reflect their expansion into the industry.
Significant growth in the data center industry was recently projected in the global edge data center market. It is expected to experience substantial expansion, with an estimated Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 22% forecasted for the period between 2023 and 2031. This surge can be attributed to the rising need for low-latency data processing and storage solutions.
These centers are situated in close proximity to end-users, enabling faster data processing and decreased network congestion. Across the Asia-Pacific region, specifically in China, Japan, and India, key factors fueling the demand for edge data centers include population growth, the upward trend in smartphone utilization, and the push toward smart cities.
