Ten of PubMatic’s Global Data Centres Powered Entirely by Renewable Energy

Digital advertising tech company PubMatic has announced that all ten of its global data centres are now powered by 100% renewable energy.

In a press statement released on June 16 2022, PubMatic affirmed that its milestone achievement was part of a broader comprehensive sustainability strategy across the organisation.

Currently, PubMatic’s data centres account for over 90% of the company’s energy usage. As PubMatic owns and operates its own infrastructure, the firm is able to have greater control over the reduction of energy consumption, and reliance on fossil fuels.

To meet its target of using 100% renewable energy, PubMatic collaborated with data centre colocation providers, and procured qualified renewable energy through virtual power purchase agreements (vPPA) and retail supply agreements.

PubMatic’s data centres now run entirely on wind and solar power, with enough energy to account for every unit of electricity used across its data centre operations worldwide.

Transparent, Efficient, and Responsible

Rajeev Goel, the co-founder and CEO of PubMatic, expressed his support for PubMatic’s efforts to strive for sustainability.

“The digital advertising supply chain of the future will be transparent and efficient, and it will also be responsible. The advertising industry must focus on reducing its environmental impact and prioritize sustainability in infrastructure and operational practices.”

PubMatic’s move is a meaningful step towards ameliorating the Internet’s carbon footprint. A World Economic Forum (WEF) report highlighted not only the Internet’s significant consumption of electricity (accounting for 2.5% of worldwide consumption), but also the steady increase of Internet traffic volume, which is anticipated to cause an eightfold increase in energy consumption between 2021 and 2030.

Furthermore, the transition to renewable energy in data centre infrastructure is of critical importance, to avoid worsening the impacts of climate change and global warming. Notably, the WEF predicts that the Internet could be responsible for 1.7 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Goel affirmed that he is “proud of what PubMatic has been able to achieve to date, and it is just the first step towards building a more environmentally sustainable business.”

PubMatic aims to embark on a comprehensive, multi-pronged sustainability plan by the end of 2022, affirming its commitment and drive to advance in sustainability measures within its press statement. For instance, PubMatic supports Ad Net Zero, an organisation committed to reducing the carbon impact of developing, producing, and running advertising to zero by the end of 2030.

Finally, the company noted that it plans to develop and publish specific goals by the end of 2022, which will be focused on improving sustainability across its data centres, offices, and daily business processes with customers and partners.

Outstanding data center projects may be nominated under the awards category “Sustainable Design & Build” for this year’s W.Media Asia-Pacific Cloud & Datacenter Awards. Thinking of nominating or sponsoring? Visit our Awards page for more information. Nominations are open until 31st July 2022.
