ST Telemedia Global Data Centre(STT GDC) has launched its first data center facility in Indonesia, the STT Jakarta 1, in the city of Bekasi.
STT GDC states this is the first facility in the data center campus which was developed under the joint venture between Indonesian conglomerate Triputra Group and global investment company Temasek.
Spanning across 18,000 square meters, the new facility is expected to support up to 19.5 MW of IT capacity, aimed at catering to the various needs including cloud, technology, banking and finance, content, gaming, ecommerce.
The building comes as a time as enterprises are seeking resilient data center services and Indonesia’s efforts to come up with more sustainable modes of operation.
Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest economy but also the world’s eighth largest greenhouse emitter that relies heavily on coal for power generation. For sustainable growth, Indonesia is making moves to increasingly bolster the country’s transition efforts toward renewable energy.
In the short term, reports say Indonesia is preparing to launch its carbon exchange trading system this September that’ll enable companies and individuals to buy carbon credits from other entities. In the long run, Indonesia aims to increase renewable energy production to contribute around 48% of the total electricity by 2030.
Studies show Indonesia has more potential solar energy than all the world’s power plants combined but photovoltaics accounted for less than 200 megawatts on electricity grids across Indonesia in 2021. That was less than 0.1 percent of total installed capacity.
