On June 8, 2022, data centre service provider ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) announced plans to construct a second data centre site in Gasan-dong, Seoul, South Korea.
Samsung SRA Asset Management, the real estate investment arm of Samsung Group, as well as an unidentified global institutional investor, are backing the establishment of this data centre site, which is set to comprise 31 205 square metres of gross floor area and deliver a development potential of 30 megawatts of IT Power.
Bruno Lopez, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of STT GDC, expressed his optimism for the new data centre’s potential, noting that “the establishment of our second data centre site in South Korea bears testament to our strong efforts in supporting the country’s digital transformation and we are delighted for this next chapter of our growth.”
Natural Next Step of Expansion in Seoul
In STT GDC’s press release, Lopez added that STT GDC’s expansion in Seoul was a “natural next step for us in offering critical digital infrastructure services to meet the growing customer demand for complex design and scale requirements.”
The second data centre will be strategically-located in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, which is near Mokdong, providing a greater ease of access to substations, critical telecommunications, subway stations (both Gasan Digital Complex and Doksan), and logistics and knowledge industry centres.
Northeast Asia, STT GDC CEO Nicholas Toh affirmed that “we are committed to deliver flexibility and scalability to our customers by offering critical infrastructure solutions that meet their evolving needs.” He expressed his hope that the prime location of the second data centre would “open doors to new opportunities for accelerated digital infrastructure, cloud-based services and innovations.”
STT GDC’s development of a second data centre in Seoul is especially timely, given positive market forecasts and high projected growth rates for South Korea’s data centre industry. South Korea remains a global leader in global digital adoption, with its world-class ICT infrastructure and investments in 5G, AI, and cloud services. South Korea’s public cloud market has been expected to double in size between 2018 and 2023, and another report by MarketWatch noted that South Korea’s data centre market size is anticipated to reach a compound annual growth rate of 7.72% from 2022 to 2031.
Under the arrangement for construction of the second data centre, both partners are set to develop the shell and core of the data centre. STT GDC will lease the shell and core building, complete remaining DC fitouts, and operate the data centre.
STT GDC’s second data centre in Seoul is expected to be ready for service by 2025.
