South Korea and the United States have reaffirmed their dedication to addressing potential risks associated with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and cloud computing. They are committed to adopting an ‘inclusive approach’ in governing the utilization of these technologies.

As per the U.S. Department of State, the two nations have also reached an agreement to collaborate in ensuring a ‘secure and trustworthy’ flow of data across their borders. This agreement was made during the U.S.-ROK Information and Communication Technology Policy Forum, which was hosted by the United States earlier this month.

Furthermore, in August, South Korea, the United States, and Japan had previously pledged to strengthen their security cooperation due to concerns related to Chinese activities in the South China Sea and other regions. On Tuesday, diplomats from South Korea, China, and Japan announced plans to hold a summit at the ‘earliest convenient time.’ Observers suggest that this summit aims to address Beijing’s apprehensions regarding the growing partnership between Seoul and Tokyo, as reported by Reuters.

South Korea and the U.S. emphasized that governance frameworks should facilitate the development of reliable artificial intelligence while upholding democratic principles and human rights. They stressed the significance of responsible stewardship within a competitive and pro-innovation environment. Both countries anticipate cooperating to realize this vision through collaborative efforts in standardization and the exchange of best practices within international organizations.

In addition, the two nations discussed the critical importance of data governance and the protection of privacy, agreeing to work together to facilitate the flow of data across their borders.

The United States and South Korea also intend to share best practices for maintaining robust and resilient cloud infrastructure. They plan to strengthen cooperation in research and development, people-to-people exchanges, and mutual investment to foster the growth of the cloud industry in both countries.
