The Odisha Cabinet in India has approved a Rs 176.83 crore (US$ 18.62 million) disaster recovery data center, set to be built on the south campus of Dharanidhar University in Keonjhar district.

According to ET Datacenters, the disaster recovery data center will function as a geographically separate backup and recovery center for the state’s primary data center in Bhubaneswar. In the event of major technical failures, cyberattacks, or natural disasters, the new facility would be able to restore essential government digital services.

The facility will have its own independent power supply, cooling systems, connectivity, and computing infrastructure. The goal is to allow the facility to operate as a recovery site with no reliance on the primary data center’s infrastructure.

Of the total cost, Rs 154 crore (US$ 16.22 million) has been allocated for capital expenditure, with the remaining Rs 22.83 crore (US$ 2.4 million) reserved for operational expenditure over a five-year period. The Fifth State Finance Commission has provided a grant-in-aid of Rs 162.83 crore (US$ 17.15 million) for the project. The balance will be covered by the Odisha Computer Application Centre, which will draw from the Electronics and Information Technology Department’s State Data Centre maintenance budget.

The state has set a nine-month implementation period, followed by five years of operations and maintenance. Krystal Integrated Services Limited has been selected to assist with the project.

The Odisha State Data Centre (OSDC), in Bhubaneswar has been operational since 2011 and hosts applications essential to the state and its departments. In July, Odisha TV reported that as demand for digital infrastructure rose, an upgrade was necessary. The state government has approved the establishment of Odisha State Data Centre 2.0 with a total approved cost of Rs 268.44 crore (US$ 28.29 million).
