Malaysia recently unveiled the Malaysia Digital Action Plan 2030 (MD2030), aimed at steering the country into becoming a progressive AI Nation and a producer of home-grown innovation from just being a technology consumer. The national action plan for 2026-2030 was launched by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The plan positions the Ministry of Digital (KD) as the lead ministry overseeing the implementation, according to the ministry’s press release. The plan outlines several ambitious targets including a 30 per cent contribution of the digital economy to the national GDP; 500,000 job opportunities in the sector; savings of RM4.5 billion for the public sector and 95 per cent of government services to be provided online end-to-end.
To ensure the seamless execution of the plan, MD2030 is driven by seven pillars, namely government, economy, infrastructure, talent, society, trust and security, and innovation. Each will be co-led by various ministries to reflect a holistic, whole-of-government approach.
“As the lead ministry, the Ministry of Digital not only shoulders the responsibility of achieving holistic economic targets, but we are also deeply committed to ensuring that this transformation is built upon a solid foundation of trust, data security, and robust governance,” said Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital.
The ministries will be supported by various agencies including the National AI Office (NAIO), National Digital Department (JDN) / GovTech Malaysia, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM), MyDIGITAL Corporation and Malaysia Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (MYCentre4IR).
Ultimately, the goal is to make Malaysia a progressive AI Nation, where AI is integrated into every aspect of life; data serves as a strategic national asset; and systems are intelligent and autonomous, the statement added.
