Equinix Opens Second xScale Data Center in Tokyo

Leading digital infrastructure company, Equinix announced the opening of its second xScale Tokyo data center, the TY13x, to cater to a growing demand for cloud services in Japan. The company says the facility will serve the unique core workload deployment needs of hyperscale companies.

Located in the Inzai region adjacent to TY12x, the new center is expected to provide 8MW in the first phase and will provide a total capacity of 36MW once fully built.

As an economic powerhouse in the APAC region and a hub for global connectivity, Japan’s data center market is projected to experience steady growth at a CAGR of 5.93% during the 2022-2028 period, attracting investments worth US$ 11.44 billion in 2028.

The investment volume puts Japan among the top data center market in the APAC region, following China and Australia. Alongside colocation operators, Japan witnessed new investments from hyperscaler Google, which announced last year a US$ 730 million investment in Japan’s Chiba.

The Japanese government is planning to unveil guidelines to disperse data centers currently concentrated in Tokyo and Osaka as well as improve domestic computing ability to withstand various geopolitical security risks associated with advanced technology. Last month, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and industry agreed to support the development of generative artificial intelligence by paying for half of the US$ 100 supercomputer in Hokkaido.
