Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has successfully established 5G network coverage across all towns following the activation of a 5G base station in Gogmo Township of Ngari Prefecture.

According to official reports from the regional communications administration, Tibet has made a substantial investment of 3.2 billion yuan (equivalent to approximately US$445.7 million) in the comprehensive development of its 5G infrastructure.

A total of 8,710 5G base stations have been strategically deployed, offering seamless 5G services to a user base of 1.84 million individuals. Currently, the region now boasts 23 5G base stations per 10,000 residents, aligning with the national average, as stated by Xinhua.

The administration noted that this consistent enhancement of 5G network services has injected substantial momentum into the region’s economy and society, fostering high-quality development.

To date, 5G technology has been effectively integrated into various sectors throughout the region, encompassing agriculture, education, healthcare, and tourism, among others.

According to Omdia research, China is on track to add over 600,000 5G base stations and reach 2.9 million by the end of this year. Currently, China installed some 2.38 million 5G base stations over four years leading up to February, according to government figures.

Moreover, according to China Mobile’s Annual Economy Report, 5G will overtake 4G as the dominant mobile technology in China by 2024. 5G adoption continues to rise as network deployments expand and more affordable devices become available.
