AWS Expands Cloud Infrastructure with Local Zone in Metro Manila

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled its latest addition to their cloud infrastructure – the AWS Local Zone in Metro Manila. This expansion aims to bring enhanced services and improved performance to corporate customers in the region.

According to Joel H. Garcia, AWS ASEAN Head of Technology, the introduction of the AWS Local Zone enables corporate clients to optimize their workloads by achieving ultra-low latency, measured in single-digit milliseconds, for end users. This advancement opens up new possibilities for businesses requiring seamless and rapid data processing.

Furthermore, Garcia revealed that AWS has plans to introduce additional services in the Philippines. Currently, customers in the Philippines can already benefit from AWS Direct Connect, which facilitates direct, private, secure, and low latency network connections to Local Zones, even from their own data centers.

The Philippines, particularly the government, has recently been adopting cloud technologies. Maria Victoria Castro, Head of Cybersecurity Bureau, Philippines’ Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said that the adoption of cloud technology by the government will result in several benefits, including improved inter-agency collaboration for greater efficiency and enhanced citizen online services, better operational continuity and business recovery, faster service deployment, greater budget control, and reduced spending on legacy infrastructure.

By using cloud computing for better governance, the Philippines has also partnered with China to foster cooperation on digital projects involving AI, 5G, big data, IoT, and cloud computing. In accordance with the MoU, the countries will share information and best practices in digital government strategy and digital government services.
