Ozone Group for Telecom & Technology (O3 Group), a newly formed Libyan telecommunications and digital infrastructure company, has announced the launch of its operations alongside the landing of the Medusa subsea cable in Benghazi. The cable landing is the first of several projects the company has planned to develop digital infrastructure in the North African nation.
According to a press release, O3 Group will carry the cable’s international capacity across the country through its fiber backbone. The company also plans to develop fiber routes toward Kufra, and from there through Chad to other landlocked African markets, in support of its ambition to establish a digital corridor linking Europe with Libya and sub-Saharan Africa. The fiber infrastructure will also support O3 Group’s new 5G mobile operation, O3 Mobile. A 5G services trial is scheduled for the end of this year, and commercial operations are expected to begin in Q2 2027.
“Libya has an important role to play in the future of connectivity across the Mediterranean. The cable landing in Benghazi is another important step in building out the Medusa network across the Mediterranean, strengthening connectivity between North Africa, Europe and the Middle East,” said Norman Albi, Medusa Submarine Cable Chief Executive Officer.
O3 Group’s other projects include an advanced data center, new digital services, and an international education program in partnership with British universities. The data center is expected to be operational by March 2027, and the design has received Tier III Certification of Design Documents from the US-based Uptime Institute. It will provide local hosting, cloud services, and business applications to telecommunications operators, financial institutions, government bodies, and other entities.
“We aim to provide Libya with advanced digital infrastructure and to create the conditions that enable businesses, institutions and young people to participate fully in a modern, inclusive digital economy, one capable of driving prosperity in Libya and extending its impact to neighbouring countries,” said Faisal Gergab, O3 Group Chairman.
Access to international connectivity is key for Libya following the launch of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2026–2030 in June 2026. The strategy aims to enable widespread use of artificial intelligence solutions in the public and private sectors as well as develop digital infrastructure.
