SoftBank Group plans to invest US$ 50 billion in Malaysia targetting artificial intelligence and data centers, Bloomberg reports quoting Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said last Saturday he had a video conference with Masayoshi Son, Founder, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank on Tuesday, where the latter had indicated that he was eyeing certain regions in Malaysia including Kuching, Sarawak for digital projects including data centers.

“He said he had chosen Sarawak – Kuching – and peninsular Malaysia to expand investment in what would be among the largest investments in the region, worth US$50 billion,” Anwar said in a speech in Melaka.

Malaysia continues to attract investments – from 2021 till 1H 2026, the country has recorded RM 385.7 billion (US$94 billion) of data center-related investment, according to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

The tech investor already has a lot on its plate – the US$ 500 billion Stargate project in the US, a US$ 84 billion project in France, and ongoing data center projects in Hokkaido and Osaka, Japan.

Softbank had earlier this month signed framework agreements with partners including Grab and Sarawak’s government agencies to explore AI infrastructure and ecosystem development in Sarawak.

SoftBank’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
