ReNew Wind Energy Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of clean energy company ReNew, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of the western Indian state of Maharashtra for a proposed ₹70,000 crore (US$ 7.3 billion) integrated green data center park in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The green data center park project aligns with Maharashtra’s goal to become a US$ 1 trillion economy by 2030. Readers would recall that just this year, Maharashtra has entered into several MoUs and agreements with different digital infrastructure providers for projects in the wider MMR and especially in areas in and around Navi Mumbai. These include projects by Tillman Global Holdings, AirtTrunk, Tata Group, and most recently, Trentrar.
According to a report by Business Standard, the planned capacity for the project stands at 750 MW. The green data center part will be developed near Mumbai in the region’s emerging data center corridor spread across Panvel, Khalapur, Taloja and Bhokharpada.
“A defining feature of the proposed park is its focus on green power for data centre operations,” ReNew said in a statement to Business Standard. “The Integrated Green Data Center Park would be required to use 51 percent green power for maintaining its operations. The project is also envisaged with dedicated power infrastructure, including facilitation for two incoming feeders from independent sources to the data centre park substation.” The company says that the project is expected to begin operations in 2028.
The MoU was signed by ReNew’s state head, and P.Anbalagan who serves as Principal Secretary, Industries, Investment & Services Department, and CEO, Invest Maharashtra. The agreement outlines how the state government will facilitate obtaining necessary permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances etc. and offer fiscal incentives as per relevant policies and regulations.
