EdgeConneX, a global, private, data center provider and developer, plans to acquire a Lyten data center site in Skellefteå, Sweden, marking its entry into the Swedish market. Supported by EQT, the site in Skellefteå could be developed into a campus with up to 1 GW of capacity, subject to regulatory approvals.

According to a press release, the facility is intended to support artificial intelligence and cloud computing workloads and would be powered primarily by renewable energy. If completed at the planned scale, it would rank among the largest data center campuses in Europe.

Dick Theunissen, Managing Director for EMEA, EdgeConneX, said, “Sweden represents an attractive long-term market for digital infrastructure investment. The country’s access to renewable energy, stable power grid, technical workforce and strong sustainability framework align with our long-term approach to infrastructure development.”

Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Head of Administration, Skellefteå Municipality, said, “We welcome EdgeConneX, a global player whose investment strengthens Skellefteå as a hub for innovation and digital development. We look forward to working together to support progress that benefits both the local community and the broader societal transformation.”

Eirik Dahle Benzon, Managing Director, EQT, said, “Over time, we believe the data center site in Skellefteå can help advance Sweden’s digital competitiveness and contribute to positioning the country at the forefront of AI development in Europe.”

Local officials welcomed the planned development and the project forms part of EdgeConneX’s broader Nordic expansion strategy, aimed at increasing digital infrastructure capacity in the region.
