Indonesia has signed a framework agreement to partner with British chip designer Arm Limited to cooperate on chip design capabilities which includes training 15,000 engineers within Arm’s ecosystem, and collaborating on next-generation semiconductor development, a government spokesperson said in a statement released today.

The partnership agreement was signed by state investment and sovereign wealth manager Danantara and Arm, and was witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in London on Monday.

Last month, w.media reported that Indonesia had signed a joint venture agreement worth an initial 2.1 trillion rupiah (US$ 124.5 million) with Arm in a bid to develop a national semiconductor ecosystem and strengthen its position in the global supply chain. At the time, it was not specified what would be delivered.

The statement  added that the deal would speed up Indonesia’s control of core technologies underpinning modern digital innovation, in an effort to boost productivity, competitiveness, and technological self-reliance.

Arm is said to control about 96 per cent of global automotive chip technology and almost 94 per cent of chip designs for data centers and artificial intelligence.
