QTS, a global digital infrastructure provider and data center designer, has received authorization from Northumberland County Council on December 2,2025, to build two 720MW data center facilities in Cambois. The first phase of a £10 billion (US$ 13bn) data center development in Northumberland has officially cleared a major hurdle, after county officials granted planning approval for initial construction.

The 540,000 sqm (5.8 million sq ft) site campus is located at the Blyth power station and one of the UK’s largest digital infrastructure projects which began in October, after initial approval was granted in August.

In a press release QTS states that the company is supported by funds from Blackstone affiliates, and is positioning the project as a catalyst for regional growth. The development has already earned National Skills Academy for Construction status from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB—the first new-build UK data center to receive the designation), reflecting QTS’s focus on workforce development and skills investment.

Tag Greason, Co-CEO at QTS, said: “QTS is thrilled to have officially started work on the site of our data centre campus. While this is the first step in a long journey, it is a visible milestone of progress made possible by the support of the local community and Northumberland County Council.”

Kanishka Narayan, UK Under-Secretary of State and AI Minister, said: “By attracting investment, putting researchers within touching distance of tech that will lead to major breakthroughs and backing the North East as an AI powerhouse, we’re delivering real change for generations to come.”

The multi-building campus project aims to enhance the region as an AI growth zone, integrate AI-driven technologies, sustainable design practices, and incentives for clean energy production while supporting broader economic regeneration.

The Cambois campus will position Northumberland as a significant hub for digital infrastructure, advanced computing, and next-generation technology investment when completed.
