Malaysia’s 5G Hits Speeds of 692Mbps During Minister’s Test

The potential of 5G technology in Malaysia was demonstrated when Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil experienced its speeds first-hand on his personal phone, reaching 692Mbps.

As an active participant in a user trial for the cutting-edge 5G network, the Malaysian minister showed the speed of 5G technology during an event in Tanjong Karang, Selangor, according to local reports.

Improved connectivity has been a major focus for Malaysia. In May, the government planned for a task force to be established to ensure that Digital Nasional Berhad’s (DNB) 5G network provides 80% coverage in the country. Fahmi said that the objective of the task force is to ensure a seamless transition to the dual 5G network by early 2024.

Malaysia had also announced plans to launch a second 5G network in January 2024 to address concerns about transparency and pricing and prevent a government-owned network from creating a national monopoly.

The implementation of the 5G network will be the key to its success. Among Malaysia’s main telco companies are Maxis Berhad, Celcom, Digi, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia and YTL Communications.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, Globe Telecom successfully rolled out the most advanced 5G technology, the End-to-End (E2E) Network Slicing Function of 5G Standalone (SA) yesterday.

Gerhard Tan, the Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe, emphasized that Network Slicing stands out due to its ability to provide customized service experiences for customers based on the specific applications they use within the network.
