WinDC unveils portable, renewable-powered AI factories

Australian company WinDC has announced the launch of what it describes as Australia’s first portable, renewable-powered AI factories, designed to place high-density computing directly at renewable generation sites. Each unit is a factory-built ISO container supporting 100 kW to 1.6 MW of critical IT load, with GPU- or CPU-dense configurations, integrated liquid cooling, and N+1 power and cooling.

The modules are deployable by truck, rail or ship and offer fibre, Starlink or 5G connectivity. Built as Tier 0 infrastructure, they are intended to run high-density AI and containerised workloads behind the meter. The first portable data centres are expected to arrive in Australia in early 2026.

The company positions the model as a response to what they says is persistent constraints in Australia’s energy and digital infrastructure, including curtailment of renewable generation, transmission congestion and a shortage of sovereign AI compute. “WinDC turns Australia’s grid crisis into a strategic advantage, converting wasted renewable energy into sovereign AI capability and a new export industry,” said WinDC founder and CEO Andrew Sjoquist (above).

WinDC executive director Jonathan Staff said the approach could help lift national capability. “Australia cannot advance in AI without expanding sovereign compute, and that is not possible if we remain tied to grid-bound infrastructure. What WinDC enables is a Green Edge, AI capability built directly on top of our renewable energy,” he said.

The launch follows Australian Energy Market Operator forecasts indicating that new solar farms in Victoria and South Australia could face curtailment rates of up to 65 percent by 2027. Existing sites currently average 4.5 per cent curtailment. “We have reached a pivotal moment for Australia’s digital economic future,” Sjoquist said, arguing that wasted renewable output and reliance on overseas AI compute have become national challenges.
