Vocus, a prominent fiber and network solutions provider, has successfully activated the Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore Cable (DJSC) system, establishing Australia’s North as a pivotal gateway for international data and solidifying Darwin as a key digital hub in the Asia Pacific region.
With a substantial investment of $100 million, the DJSC system spans 1,000 kilometers, linking Vocus’ pre-existing North-West Cable System, which extends from Darwin to Port Hedland, with the Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) from Perth to Singapore.
This integration creates a formidable network with a total investment of $500 million, covering an extensive distance of 7,700 kilometers between Darwin and Singapore, thereby facilitating seamless, low-latency connectivity between Australia’s Northern regions and Asia.
The implementation of the DJSC heralds Darwin and Port Hedland as the fourth and fifth Australian entry points for international connectivity, joining the ranks of Sydney, Perth, and Maroochydore.
The Northern Territory Government’s visionary Terabit Territory strategy demonstrated its commitment to the project by providing a significant $7.9 million investment, underscoring the region’s dedication to bolstering its digital infrastructure.
This project promises to bring forth a plethora of direct and indirect benefits for the northern regions of Australia, catering to the connectivity demands of local businesses and communities, thereby fostering more dependable and efficient communications. From remote Indigenous communities to resource operators in the Pilbara, all stakeholders stand to gain from the low-latency connectivity directly into Asia, empowering them to engage on a global scale.
Additionally, the Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore Cable reinforces the resilience and security of Australia’s international cable network, ensuring uninterrupted and reliable connectivity, even in the face of natural disasters or faults on other cables.
In essence, the DJSC epitomizes a transformative development, propelling Northern Australia into an era of enhanced digital accessibility and connectivity, further solidifying its status as a formidable player in the global digital landscape.
