Viettel Group, a Vietnamese state-owned multinational telecommunications, technology and manufacturing conglomerate, has recently broken ground on two national projects, namely the An Khanh Data Center and the Viettel Research & Development Center. Investment in the two companies amount to about US$ 1 billion, according to Viettel’s Linkedin post.

Based in Hanoi, the An Khanh Data Center, is one of Vietnam’s two largest hyperscale data centers. Details of the project are scarce however.  In April, the company broke ground on its largest data center carrying a total capacity of up to 140MW and approximately 10,000 racks on a land area of 4 ha.

Viettel plans to build 24 data centers by 2030, with 560MW in total capacity. The company currently operates 14 facilities spread across Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Duong. It is building 11 more that will handle 40% of national demand.

Meanwhile, the Viettel R&D Center based in Hoa Lac is positioned as a strategic R&D hub, leading the Vietnamese high-tech defense industry complex.

The groundbreakings were in conjunction with the country’s 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2. The two projects are part of a broader national campaign involving the simultaneous commencement and inauguration of 250 projects across 34 provinces and cities.
