Vietnam and Laos are stepping up their collaboration in disaster management with the construction of data and communication centers. This strategic partnership was solidified during the third bilateral meeting between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Lao Ministry of Technology and Communications (MTC) on August 5.
A key focus of the meeting was the implementation of draft proposals for a data and communication center for natural disasters, specifically earthquakes, and a national center for data storage and computing cloud in Laos. These initiatives were outlined in the minutes of the 46th Session of the Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee on Bilateral Cooperation in 2024.
To expedite these projects, the Institute of Geophysics under VAST and the Research Institute for Smart Technology (ARIST) under MTC have established a joint laboratory for earthquake data and communication. VAST has also provided essential equipment and training to 15 ARIST officers in data analysis.
The two agencies have committed to continued cooperation in human resources development, capacity building in technology and innovation, and knowledge sharing in digital technology.
As a recognition of his contributions to scientific and technological cooperation, Lao Minister of Technology and Communications Boviengkham Vongdara was conferred the title of “Honorary Professor” by the Academy of Science and Technology under VAST.
These advancements underscore the strong bilateral ties between Vietnam and Laos and their shared commitment to harnessing technology for the benefit of their respective populations.
