Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Singtel’s regional data center arm Nxera have announced a joint venture to develop data centers in Malaysia. The partnership will kick off with a sustainable, hyper-connected AI-ready data center campus in Johor.

This strategic collaboration aims to cater to the growing demand for cloud, digitalization, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the region, particularly for hyperscalers, next-generation AI application providers, and enterprises seeking digital transformation.

The joint venture leverages the strengths of both companies: TM brings Malaysia’s largest domestic network infrastructure, extensive international subsea cable systems, and the largest interconnected data center in Malaysia. While Nxera offers expertise in developing and operating sustainable, hyper-connected AI-ready data centers, with a presence in Singapore and access to a comprehensive network of subsea fiber-optic cables.

The first data center campus will be located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, strategically positioned near subsea cable links between Singapore and Malaysia. The initial phase will offer 64 MW of capacity, scalable up to 200 MW to meet rising market demands.

The campus will be built to the latest standards for reliability, security, and sustainability, featuring LEED certification for energy efficiency and liquid cooling for high-power density workloads.

Customers will benefit from a wide range of data, connectivity, data center, and platform solutions. Additionally, they will have access to TM’s Cloud Alpha Edge solution and Nxera’s Paragon cloud orchestration platform and upcoming GPU-as-a-Service. This allows them to orchestrate AI workloads in a multi-network and multi-cloud environment.

TM Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, sees this partnership as a significant step towards establishing Malaysia as a preferred digital hub. The data center will serve as a catalyst for high-performance computing and lay the groundwork for future cloud and AI advancements.

Nxera CEO, Mr Bill Chang, expressed his excitement about entering the Malaysian market with TM. This collaboration advances their vision to be the region’s leading data center platform, supporting businesses with the digital infrastructure they need.

This joint venture signifies a significant development in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure landscape, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and business growth in the region.
