ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) and Basis Bay, a prominent provider of sustainable cloud and green data centers, have announced a strategic partnership to establish and operate data center projects in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya, Malaysia.
The joint venture’s inaugural project will be a state-of-the-art data center campus in Cyberjaya, located 30 kilometers outside Malaysia’s capital city. Spanning over three acres of land, the campus will consist of two buildings, with ‘Cyberjaya DC.2’ designed as a highly secure, eco-friendly premium data center meeting global standards of security and sustainability.
This facility, catering to local and international banks, financial institutions, and government agencies, is set to commence operations in 2024.
Additionally, the joint venture will construct ‘STT Kuala Lumpur 1,’ specifically catering to the hyperscale segment. Construction of the first phase is slated to begin soon, with completion expected by 2025.
This collaboration marks a unique partnership, combining Basis Bay’s local expertise and extensive network with STT GDC’s global portfolio of 85 data centers across 10 countries. The infusion of foreign direct investment from STT GDC brings advanced technology, international standards, best practices, and access to a broader market, including hyperscale customers.
The joint venture aims to capitalize on Malaysia’s growing demand for digital infrastructure, fueled by the country’s robust internet penetration rate of 96.8%, encompassing approximately 33 million people.
With the under-35 demographic constituting over 67% of all internet users in Malaysia, the digital economy is poised for significant growth. Thus, the country anticipates US$2.25 billion investments in local data centers by 2028.
The driving force behind this projected growth in the data center industry is attributed to the strategic policies and plans implemented by the government.
