Singapore data centre fire: Updates

SG.GS which was reportedly the owner of the data centre which caught fire yesterday, has clarified through a statement that they are not the owner or operator of the data centre but had leased the rack space from WebSatMedia. We can confirm that the fire did not originate in one of our systems,” said the statement. It added that “SG.GS equipment was on the floor where the fire occurred.”

At the time of writing, WebSatMedia’s website is still down. W.Media have reached out to them and are waiting for a response. WebSatMedia specializes in providing satellite,VSAT, broadcast, fixed and wireless infrastructure.

It is understood that there are several data centres operating at 750C Chai Chee Road, the location of the fire.

Investigations are still ongoing to find the cause of the fire.  Our earlier report can be found here.

“We are aware of a fire at a data centre in Singapore at which SG.GS has a local presence. SG.GS is not the data centre owner and we understand that the fire has been put out by the building’s fire suppression system and the local fire brigade. We are working closely with teams on the ground to re-establish network connectivity to any of our affected clients,” the statement further said, quoting Shawn Ang, Managing Director at SG.GS.

SG.GS said they are looking into “why and how this email (purportedly sent by SG.GS to the press earlier) was sent out in order to issue further corrections.”  The Straits Times had reported that an email was issued by SG.GS stating that an “explosion” had caused the fire and that they had dispatched their field engineers to do a thorough investigation of (the) damage.” Further, the email purportedly said: “Initial checks showed that servers within the centre are still in service, but the company “needed some time to recover”.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly when new information emerges.
