Shell is testing its innovative ‘immersion cooling fluid’ as a coolant for data centers’ servers and computing equipment. This cooling liquid is currently undergoing trials at Microsoft and Alibaba in China, with plans to offer it to the Asian market, including the Philippines.
When used in data centers, the fluid circulates to remove heat from components, reducing emissions. Efficient cooling is crucial for data centers to prevent server overheating and outages.
Shell’s Executive Vice President, Jason Wong, emphasized the importance of compatibility between the cooling fluid and machines. The company’s cooling fluid is praised for its ability to efficiently keep computer components cool, significantly reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, cut costs, and increase location flexibility.
The rapid growth of big data, cloud computing, AI, machine learning, and media streaming has increased the demand for more effective cooling solutions in data centers. While many currently rely on air cooling, innovations like cooling liquids, water cooling, and in-row cooling are emerging as alternatives.
In Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, there is a strong desire to become a data center hub. Industry players are actively seeking reliable and efficient solutions to maintain operations while reducing carbon footprints and costs.
