Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) has announced last week that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Solar Singapore Pte Ltd, has signed a 25-year Renewable Energy Purchase Agreement (REPA) with Malkoha Pte Ltd (Malkoha), a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, Inc. Under the REPA, Sembcorp will build, own, and operate approximately 150 MWp floating solar photovoltaic (PV) system on Kranji Reservoir in Singapore.
This PV system will support Meta’s operations with renewable energy in the region, including its data centre operations in Singapore. Subject to fulfilling the conditions under the REPA and obtaining the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities, construction of the floating solar farm is expected to commence in the first half of 2027.
According to Toh Wee Khiang, Director of the Hydrogen & Sustainable Energies Office at the Energy Market Authority (EMA), at 150 MWp, it will be the largest floating solar project in Singapore surpassing the only existing large scale 60 MWp floating solar installation on Tengeh Reservoir. Toh believes there will be more large scale floating solar projects on Singapore’s reservoirs in the years ahead. In his Linkedin page, Toh estimated that rooftop solar installations will reach close to 90% on HDB housing in a few years’ time from the current 40% as at end 2024.
