Scaleway, the European public cloud and AI platform owned by the iliad Group, has launched a new cloud region in Milan, marking its official entry into the Italian market. Artificial intelligence is a key focus for Scaleway. This launch is part of a €3 billion (US$ 3.5 billion) investment program announced by the iliad Group. The company is building out its cloud platform with advanced AI capabilities.
Scaleway provides AI computing power for organizations to train and deploy models at scale and collaborates with partners like Mistral AI and Hugging Face to make leading open-source models accessible quickly.
According to a press release, the new Milan cloud region will feature three availability zones to provide high availability and redundancy for mission-critical workloads. The first zone, located in a data center in Settimo Milanese, is already operational. The other two zones, in Basiglio and Milan, are scheduled to come online in the coming months.
Damien Lucas, CEO, Scaleway, said, “Europe cannot rely entirely on foreign hyperscalers to fuel its digital economy. European companies must have access to hyperscale cloud platforms built in Europe, managed in accordance with EU regulations, and aligned with European priorities.”
Preparation for the launch started when Scaleway opened a branch office in Milan to support the technical and sales operations locally. The company is also pursuing partnerships within Italy and is seeking ACN (National Cybersecurity Agency) level 1 certification, which is required for public sector projects.
As a fully European-owned cloud provider, Scaleway emphasizes data localization and operation under European jurisdiction. Its teams, including R&D, are entirely Europe-based, and 90 percent of its infrastructure providers are European vendors.
By situating infrastructure closer to Italian organizations, the company aims to improve service for cloud-native and AI-based applications. The move is part of Scaleway’s broader European expansion strategy, which already includes cloud regions in France, Poland, and the Netherlands, with additional regions planned in Sweden and Germany.
