Sarawak Progresses in Achieving 5G Expansion and Digital Transformation Goals

Sarawak, an early adopter of 5G technology, plans to have 587 operational sites by 2024, covering 59.6% of its populated areas, according to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari emphasized the government’s proactive approach towards Sarawak’s digital future, aiming to become a leading digital economy and society by 2030. He highlighted the need for 7,000 telecommunication towers to achieve 99.9% Internet penetration statewide. Presently, 3,856 towers are completed, and 761 more will be built by the end of this year, with the rest slated for completion before 2030.

Abang Johari also announced the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network, the government’s first broadband network offering 4G and 5G support to rural communities.

Additionally, the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Communication (Smart) project aims to expand rural connectivity with 600 operational telecommunication towers by the third quarter of 2024. The government is collaborating with the private sector to establish eco-friendly green data centers, vital for the digital economy’s growth.

In terms of digital talent development, the Sarawak government is investing in nurturing talent and supporting digital entrepreneurs to prevent a brain drain. There are 22 government and business-funded innovation hubs and a ‘Digital Village’ to boost startup growth, resulting in 26 high-tech startups and 27 research projects moving towards commercialization.

The government’s Startup and Innovation Track program focuses on innovative individuals and groups, with an estimated RM13.9 million investment in 2023 for innovation hub and digital village accelerator programs, fostering tech solutions for the market.

Furthermore, Sarawak is empowering small and medium enterprises by providing digital tools, especially in rural areas, to enhance economic activities. Abang Johari reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving digital economy goals and facilitating essential digital transformations for the people’s future.
