According to an announcement posted by Nutanix and its partner iret, Inc., Sapporo City has deployed Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on Amazon Web Services to boost its hybrid cloud.
The city has also selected Nutanix Flow Network Security to create the first hybrid cloud environment used by a local government in Japan.
Promoting Sustainable Urban Development with ICT
Sapporo is the largest ordinance-designated city in Hokkaido, with a population of approximately 1.96 million people. The city is one of several regional cities across Japan which are working with the private sector to create platforms for the sustainable exchange of data, to enhance municipal services.
In addition, the city also developed the “Sapporo ICT Utilization Strategy” to promote the elimination of labour shortages, productivity improvement, and sustainable urban development, using ICT.
However, Sapporo City also faced key challenges which affected the speed of its digitalisation and deployment of IT resources. Notably, the city had to renew its infrastructure while keeping costs down and ensuring new infrastructure was disaster proof.
As such, Sapporo City first used a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solution from Nutanix to modernise and improve the efficiency of its on-premises data center. In Nutanix’s press release statement, the company affirmed that by selecting NC2 on AWS, the city of Sapporo was able to create a hybrid cloud environment.
This hybrid cloud infrastructure would enable the city to scale-up its IT in accordance with its digital needs, without incurring significant expenditure. NC2 on AWS reduced Sapporo City’s IT complexity and operational burdens by enabling applications to be managed on-premises and in the cloud using a single interface.
By relying on a single interface, the city has managed to avoid potential hindrances in its functioning which could have resulted from delivery delays due to global shortages, if additional network equipment, servers and infrastructure, were required.
Sapporo City currently runs security-related workloads on the cloud, and has plans to migrate internal IT systems, portal, and external websites to the cloud in future. Satoru Isobe, Sapporo LA Sales Section at Otsuka Corporation, said that “we were commissioned by Sapporo City to add to the Nutanix HCI infrastructure that we had installed and maintained by building a hybrid cloud environment. We had a very tight deadline to meet, considering the migration of the systems that were already in place. With the support of Nutanix and iret, the NC2 on AWS environment was up and running in a short period of time, allowing for smooth operations throughout the entire project.”
He affirmed that “we will continue to work closely with Nutanix and iret to provide better services to Sapporo City in the future.”
