Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani has revealed that the company will build nationwide Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This will include an AI-ready data center in Jamnagar, located in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
“I believe the true power of AI lies in making it accessible to everyone everywhere,” said Ambani, while speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the business conglomerate that dabbles in everything from energy, petrochemicals, natural gas, retail, entertainment, telecommunications, mass media, and textiles. “We are committed to democratising AI, offering powerful AI models and services to everyone in India at the most affordable prices. To achieve this, we are laying the groundwork for a truly national AI infrastructure,” he said.
Ambani revealed, “We plan to establish gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar, powered entirely by Reliance’s green energy, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and a greener future.” He further said, “By leveraging our expertise in infrastructure, networking, operations, software, and data and by collaborating with our global partners, our goal is to create the world’s lowest AI inferencing cost, right here in India. This will make AI applications in India more affordable than anywhere else, making AI accessible to all.”
Jio is Reliance’s telecommunications business, and Jio Brain is its suit of AI tools. Reliance Industries is also a part of Digital Connexion, which is its three-way joint venture with Canada’s Brookfield Asset Management, and US-based Digital Realty to enter the data center space. Readers would recall that Digital Connexion’s first data center MAA10 was inaugurated in Chennai in January 2024.
According to research by the IMARC Group, “The India artificial intelligence market size reached US$ 911.3 Million in 2023.” It expects the market to reach US$ 9,631.4 Million by 2032, exhibiting a growth rate (CAGR) of 29.1 percent during 2024-2032.
